Zanzibar Spice Farm

5 Hours

Overview

Spices and herbs were originally introduced to Zanzibar by Portuguese traders in the 16th century, brought from their colonies in South America and India. This tour is a walking tour inside a spice farm (shamba), where you will learn how different spices, herbs, and tropical fruits grow and how they are cultivated.

While in the farm, you shall see how the spices, herbs, and fruits grow in their natural environment. Your tour guide will describe how each crop can be used for cooking, medicine, or daily life. You will also smell and taste different spices, herbs, and fresh tropical fruits such as clove, lemongrass, nutmeg, cinnamon, turmeric, vanilla, coconuts, papaya, chili, black pepper, jackfruit, cardamom, cassava, and oranges.

After the tour, you will enjoy tropical fruits at the farm, where you can really taste the different ways of using spices. The tour finishes with a stop at a spice stall selling fresh packaged spices (cash only), where you can buy natural products directly from the farm.

This tour is educational, fun, and full of natural flavors from Zanzibar.
